You can see the blocks in the cavities to the left hand side of the brick, plugs created by solitary bees to close their nests. At first glance, these look to be red mason bees but we will try and get a site visit so that we can confirm this.
Ideally, you need to place Bee Bricks at least 1 metre up from ground level, although we have seen success at between 1/2 metre and 1 metre up, but no lower. There is no upward limit, we've had reports of success on a third floor balcony in London. The Bricks then also need to be south facing, in as much direct sunlight as you can find. And then, potentially, the bees will be moving in before you do!
The Bees moved in quick!
We were very happy to hear from Laura on our Facebook page recently who shared the photo below with us, asking if this meant the bees had moved in already. Laura is building a new build in Cornwall and installed four Bee Bricks in June 2018. She noticed the Bricks had capped cavities in September 18, meaning that the bees moved in before Laura did!
