The birdball belle feeder from the Green&Blue range is the perfect way to feed fat balls and kitchen scraps to garden birds, however you will often find that the sort of fat balls that are widely available actually aren’t that great for birds and besides, it’s very easy, and satisfying, to make your own.
This weekend, excited about the Big garden birdwatch, Green&Blue co-founders, Kate and Gavin’s, daughter Flora made homemade fat cakes to go in the belle feeders and we thought we’d share the recipe with you so you can have a go too.
Birds love fat cakes (suet balls, fat balls, they get called all sorts!) and need them at this time of year to give them extra energy to keep warm.
They are quick and easy to make and you can use all kinds of kitchen scraps, such as oats, chopped nuts and cheese. Simply mix with melted lard or suet for perfect shapes to pop in your Birdball Belle feeder.
NB. It is best to avoid Turkey fat as this can be harmful to birds.
1. We used one part fat to two parts seed. Start by mixing all of the dry ingredients together.
2. Next, melt some suet or lard in a pan and add to the mix.
3. Stir well until the fat has all been absorbed and the mixture is nice and sticky.
4. You can use an old yogurt pot or egg tray with a hole in the bottom for threading string, or you could use cookie shapes, Flora’s first choice, to then pop in the feeder.
5. Once the mix is ready simply pour the warm fat mixture into your container.
5. Place in the fridge to set, then cut through and peel away the pot, or simply pop out the shapes and pop them in your Belle feeder.
6. Hang them up and enjoy welcoming your favorite birds to your garden.
